Yesterday we had a three and a half hour lunch, almost comparable to a legit meal of French cuisine, with a few guests at home. It was 80 degree F, cloudless sky and a delicious meal that ended with sorbet made of hundred dollars Chateau Yquem. We could have had anything else that we would ever want, but, we were talking about the joy of simple living.
Patrick recalled how much joy the kids in Nepal would have over the thousand games they make up with little elastic bands. I remember how much fun my friends and I would have over an empty pen shaft and some orange peel. (meaning, we would punch holes on the peel with the pen and you can shoot the orange peel like a gun by blowing on the other end of the pen. We usually ended up having red little faces from blowing "the pen" so hard and the whole classroom smelled like delicious citrus) How about writing a letter? How about staring out the window and watch the wind comb through hills of foliage? How about skidding rocks by a river and chatting with a friend all afternoon long?
Where did the word "boredom" come from? What brings us joy? New video games and movies come out everyday--- why is it never enough? Or, can we change that? Can we live, simply live, and enjoy living?
If you love French cuisine, you will love this cassoulet recipe.
