(Wrote this yesterday but my computer crashed….) Today is Valentine's day and Williamstown is a winter wonderland. More than twelve inches of snow on the ground, friends skiing to class, wool hats and mittens. It isn't a cold day, though, there is so much love around. Sometimes I think these commercialized holidays are such… bull. But on the other hand, it can a great reminder… tell the people who you love that you love them. Sura always gets flowers for his mom and sister. Friends getting each others orders of carnation or a kiss from the Rugby team… it’s quite lovely. Love is much more than romance. And, you know, love is actually… all around. :P
Since it is Valentine’s Day, I want to talk about finding love in our lives. We often think of love as the perfect, painless, eternal love that is wondering around in the world waiting for us to discover. But is that really so? How often do you find love or does it more often just falls in your lap when you are not looking for it? And how often is it perfect? Last weekend when I went to Kripalu for a yoga retreat, my teacher David Romanelli quoted Rumi, "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it." Love is high and love is low. Feel it, and feel it deeply. Give it space to make mistake, give it space to be reckless, give it space to be what it is. With an open mind, love is only its beauty and it will be your salvation. “Fear of suffering is worse than suffering itself.” With a spacious heart, without agenda, without expectation, love will nurture you. Happy Valentine's Day!!
This is how sharks make love... I saw it in person. The male shark bites and holds the female's fin, spinning her round and around. Haha, I guess love is really high and low, right?
